Informal discussions in the early 1900's about the ideas of Freud, Janet, Bleuler, Bernsheim and others led, in 1933, to the admission of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI) to membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. From a formal training program for psychoanalysts, the Institute now includes a psychoanalytical training program for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other mental health professionals. The Society serves the continuing education and professional needs of its members, plus offering seminars in related subjects to the community. Over one hundred patients are in treatment with these students in low-fee supervised analyses. Over eighty members actively participate as psychoanalytic training faculty. BPSI membership is more than 350. Recognition of the BPSI training programs includes the American Psychological Association, the Veterans Administration, and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.
