Cape Poge Light |
Cape Poge is a windswept point at the northeast tip of a long narrow strip of land adjoining Chappaquiddick Island, close to the eastern edge of the island of Martha's Vineyard, south of Cape Cod. The first 35-foot wooden Cape Poge Lighthouse was built at the edge of a bluff for $2,000 in 1801 to help guide mariners into Edgartown Harbor. Land erosion caused by extreme weather conditions over the years led to the deterioration of the tower. It was replaced two times, and also had to be moved back from the bluff to prevent its complete destruction from the encroaching water erosion.
A 1 1/4 hour tour is available through the Trustees of Reservations. The tour leaves the Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily Monday through Friday in summer. Reservations are required.
