Charlestown Navy Yard

Located in Charlestown, this is part of the Boston National Historical Park. Built in 1800, it served as a repair and supply depot for 174 years. Such innovations as shiphouses and a ropewalk were among the yard's contributions. The Navy's first ship of the line, the USS Independence, was built and launched here in 1814. There are representatives of two shipbuilding traditions docked at the yard.
