Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York City's Central Park, worked and lived in this house from 1883 until his retirement. The estate reflects Olmsted's design principle that nature and buildings can exist in harmony. A 17-minute orientation video entitled "From Pencil to Park: Preserving Olmsted Landscapes" is shown prior to guided tours. Tours include restored portions of the historic Olmsted Office where thousands of public and private landscapes were created by the Olmsted firm over the course of a century beginning in 1883. Seasonal tours of the newly-restored "Fairsted" grounds also provide visitors with a living exhibit of Olmsted's design principles and craftsmanship.
