Longfellow's Wayside Inn, a National Historic Site, is said to be one of the country's oldest inns. Records indicate that the inn was in exsistence as early as 1716. The Inn was originally called How's Tavern or the Red Horse Tavern, but after the pu blication of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Tales Of a Wayside Inn in 1863, the Inn became popularly known as the Wayside Inn. Today it is both a working inn and a museum. Also featured are many other builings of interest such as a working gristmill and a carriage house.
