Newburyport

Newburyport is located in Essex County 35 miles N of Boston between Salisbury and S Byfield along Highway 1 on the banks of the Merrimack River near Parker River National Wildlife Reserve. Once a shipbuilding center, Newburyport is the birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Built in the 1650s, the Coffine House on High Rd, reflects the many generations of residency by the Coffin family. Guided tours are given on weekends in summer. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,808, an increase of 491 since 1990.

Newburyport is part of the Boston, Massachusetts-New Hampshire metro area.
