This memorial, cast in bronze by the Goreham Manufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island, was unveiled in Boston on Veteran's Day. Sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens to commemorate the first black regiment of the Civil War, its architectural setting was designed by Charles Follen McKim. The 54th Regiment sustained heavy casualties, including its commander, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, in its assault on Fort Wagner in 1863.
