The Museum of Afro American History began its first exhibitions and public gatherings in 1963. The not-for-profit history institution is dedicated to preserving, conserving, and interpreting the contributions of African American's during the colonial period in New England. The museum is nationally and internationally known for the African Meeting House on Beacon Hill (a National Historic Landmark), Abeil Smith School on Beacon Hill (the first publicly funded grammar school in the country for African American children), and the Black Heritage Trail (a 1.6 mile walking tour encompassing the largest collection of historic sites in the country relating to the life of a free African American community prior to the Civil War. The Museum of Afro American History also offers a variety of educational workshops, youth camps, special events, and unique partnerships.
