Located in the historic center of town at Oakland, circa 1811, the second-oldest building in Howard County. The Museum promotes understanding of African art and culture through a variety of exhibits displayed in 750 feet of gallery space; displays include sculptured figures, textiles, basketry, jewelry, masks and musical instruments.

The museum also sponsors community outreach programs such as lectures, films, tours to Africa, various workshops, academic courses, and dance and musical performances which include the Baltimore-Washington JAZZfest; call for a current schedule. A museum Gift Shop carries a distinctive line of African and African-inspired items; tours of the museum are offered. Open Tuesday-Friday and Sunday afternoons; closed holidays.
