This prestigious museum, the largest in the state of Maryland, is home to a permanent collection of more than 100,000 art objects, ranging from ancient mosaics to contemporary art. Highlighting the museum's holdings is the Cone Collection, comprised of postimpressionist masterpieces by the likes of van Gogh and Picasso.
Eight galleries are dedicated to works by European 'old masters,' while the West Wing for Modern Art exhibits modern artworks; a separate gallery is devoted to the world's second-largest collection of paintings by the contemporary pop-artist Andy Warhol. A museum library is open to public research by appointment.
The museum also sponsors a changing schedule of temporary exhibits, as well as gallery talks hands-on workshops. The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday; admission to the museum's socially-oriented 'Freestyle' program is free to the public on the first Thursday evening of the month.
