Oakland Maryland |
Oakland is located in Garrett County 64 miles southwest of Cumberland along US 219 near the West Virginia state line in extreme western Maryland. Outdoor opportunities abound in Oakland. Herrington Manor State Park, five miles north, offers both summer and winter activities, including cross-country skiing and hiking. Near the confluence of Muddy Creek and the Youghiogheny River, Swallow Falls State Park is home to the state's largest waterfall; Muddy Creek Falls.
Covering some 600 acres, Cranesville Sub-Arctic swamp was formed during the ice age. Due to the high elevation and cool climate, the swamp contains vegetation normally found in the arctic regions. The boardwalk through the bog is open during the dry season, in the summer and fall.
