Belfast is located in Waldo County, of which it is the county seat, southwest of Bangor between Camden and Bucksport along US Highway 1 near Penobscot Bay and the Penobscot River. Situated on Maine's Atlantic seacoast. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,639, an increase of 284 since 1990.
