In 1590, Monhegan Island was described by a mariner as "a great island backed like a whale." The description is due to 160-foot headlands that slope down to coves on a low and quiet tail. Though barely a mile square, among
Penobscot Bay's smallest, the island, 10 miles offshore, boast 600 species of wildflowers, more than 400 years of intriguing history, and unequaled beauty. Two thirds of Monhegan is laced with 17 miles of footpaths that run along dramatic cliffs pounded by surf and through tall stands of pine. Monhegan is a genuine art colony and some 20 artists open their studios during the summer months.
