This state park, located where the Maine coast meets New Brunswick, contains Seal Rock, the easternmost point in the United States. Covering nearly 500 acres, the site features scenic rocky cliffs, rising over 80 feet above the ocean, which can be t raversed by means of a rugged trail.
The historic West Quoddy Lighthouse, located at the park entrance, overlooks the Bay of Fundy where whales can be sighted in season. Constructed in 1808 and rebuilt in 1858, visitors may recognize its famous red-and-white-striped tower, as it is probably the second-most photographed lighthouse in the country. There is no public access to the lighthouse tower or keeper's house (occupied by a park ranger during the summer), but a nature trail along the bluffs provides spectacular views of nearby Grand Manan Island.
Other park facilities include a picnic site and a boardwalk showcasing native plant life along a peat bog. Open mid-May through mid-October; off-season call (207)941-4014.
