Caspian is located in
Iron County, and in the
Northern Region. This community is found northwest of
Iron Mountain between
Crystal Falls and the Wisconsin state line along Highway 189 near the Brute River and Lake Ottawa. Situated in Michigan's Upper Peninsula region.
Beginning in 1884, Caspian was a productive iron mining area when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad built a station here. The original name given to the community was Palatka, with a post office opening under that name in 1906.
Caspian has stayed alive over the years because of lumbering and tourism. This town is now known for its fine historical museum which has preserved much of the areas iron mining history.
