Founded by lumberman Langdon Hubbard in the mid-1850s, Huron City grew into a village of several hundred over the next decades. When the Great Fires of 1871 and 1881 devastated the region, Huron City became a farming community. Ironically, on the shore of Lake Huron - one of the world's greatest freshwater lakes - the town faded because of the lack of "sweet" water. Huron City has been preserved by his descendants, principally Carolyn Lucas, and the William Lyon Phelps Foundation. Huron City guests view life as it was lived 100 years ago. The exhibits are original to the site or have been moved in from close by. Rather than visiting a single structure with antique displays, visitors will be able to enter historic buildings in their original setting. Picturesque and beautifully landscaped, the town is a worthwhile photographic subject. Inside the buildings, collections are arrayed to dazzle the eye and delight the senses.
