Their hospital opened its doors to the community in 1942. Formed by a small group of osteopathic physicians and originally named
Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital, it was founded on the principles of holistic and patient-centered care. Due to its overwhelming success, the hospital outgrew its original location and relocated to its current site in Southeast Grand Rapids in 1957. In the process, they grew from 28 to 72 beds. Only a decade later, the hospital had expanded to 183 beds. In 1985, the hospital's name was changed to Metropolitan Hospital to reflect that it had grown into its full-service, multi-specialty hospital serving a growing region.
