Russell Alvord and Daniel Richards traveled from New York State and obtained 40 acres of land with the deed signed by President Andrew Jackson in 1830. A year later the two men opened an inn, the Old Tavern, a changing point for the stage line, known as the New Hudson Station. The first government post office on record was established on June 2, 1852, (with Alanson Smith as its first postmaster). The village was platted by Russell Alvord in 1837.
