Plainwell is in Allegan County, and in the West-Southwest Region. This community is located just north of Kalamazoo between Battle Creek and Allegan along Highway 89 on the banks of the Kalamazoo River near Baseline and Pine lakes.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,214, an increase of 157 since 1990. Plainwell is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan metro area. Plainwell was first settled in 1831 by Dr. Cyrenius Thompson. He became the first postmaster here in 1833. It was not officially registered and platted until 1863, after tavern owner Henry Wellover had it done. It was officially incorporated as a village in 1869, and as a city in 1934. While being a moderate sized town, Plainwell is supported by paper manufacturing, small businesses and its local comuters to Kalamazoo. A relaxing walk along the river can be found just north across the street.
