Port Sanilac is in Sanilac County, and in the Central Region. This community is located north of Port Huron along Highway 25 near the Black and Elk rivers. Situated on the shore of Lake Huron.
Around 1840, group of Detroiters came here to make tan-bark and built a bark shanty. Passing sailors gave the area its first name of Bark Shanty Point.
Today, Port Sanilac is a historic waterfront village with an up-to-date harbor facility, scenic beaches and famous shipwrecks. There are numerous local attractions. The Sanilac County Underwater Preserve has shipwrecks dating as far back as 1864 and is a playground for scuba divers. The Barn Theater puts on light-hearted productions at modest prices. Located just north of the village limits, Huron Shores Golf Club has a course that is both scenic and challenging.
