Canby is located in Yellow Medicine County, in the Historic Prairies Region, just nine miles east of South Dakota. It calls itself "The Gateway to the Prairie." Stone Hill Regional Park / Del Clarke Lake is two miles south of Canby. The Englund Trail Leads from the Canby Swimming Pool to Del Clarke Lake for a relaxing walk, bike ride or rollerblading. Camping, fishing, picnicking, swimming, hiking, and biking are available at Stone Hill.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,812, a decrease of 14 since 1990.
