Detroit Lakes is located in Becker County (of which it is the county seat) east of Moorhead on US 10 at Hwy 34, in the Woods and Waters Region. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 7,286, an increase of 145 since 1990.As its name implies, the area is laced with lakes, and nearby is Detroit Mtn. Ski Area, for snow sports.
