Standing high on Center Street hill, Hermann looks out over the town of New Ulm. The total height of this monument and statue is 102 feet, and visitors may climb up the winding stairs during summer months. Known as one of New Ulm's best-known attra ctions, the Hermann Monument is commonly known as "Hermann the German". This monument was erected to honor the memory of Hermann, the Cherusci, who freed the German people from the Roman oppression. The first such monument was erected in 1875 in northern Germany, just outside the town of Detmold. This spot is near the place where Hermann's Battle was fought.
