Completed in 1891, the home of James J Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway, is known for its massive scale, rugged stone, fine detail, and ingenious mechanical systems which reflect the former owner's powerful presence. Guided tours, given every half-hour, illustrate family-servant relations and private and public life as it was lived in the Gilded Age mansion; reservations are recommended. The red sandstone residence is now a multiple-use historic house and museum, open to the public, offering educational programs, neighborhood and group tours, lectures, concerts, dramatic programs, and art exhibitions. Located 1/2 block west of the Cathedral of St. Paul on Summit Ave; open Wednesday through Saturday, year-round. Children under 6 yrs and MHS members admitted free.
