In the Historic Prairies Region, Slayton has been the county seat of Murray County since 1889, and serves as the hub of retail services, agriculture and government of the county. Lodging is available in a full-service motel. Just a short distance outside of town is a private campground, a motel-lodge with a campground, a resort on Lake Shetek, and the Lake Shetek State Park. Slayton is located where US 59 and Hwy 30 meet, east of Pipestone.
