The Warden's House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally built in 1853 as the residence of the Stillwater Territorial Prison warden, and given to the
Washington County Historical Society by the State of Minnesota in 1941. Most of the home's 14 rooms are decorated with the society's collection of period furnishings, returning visitors to the time when Europeans settled in the St. Croix Valley. The reconstructed carriage house is now being remodeled to include a handicapped accessible restroom, a research reading room, and collections storage space. The shuffling of collections will mean changes at the Warden's House Museum; check for information on the new exhibits. The museum is located at the north end of downtown Stillwater, across from the Zephyr depot parking lot. No smoking or eating in the museum is allowed; please obtain permission before taking photographs.
