Jewell Cemetery was established by George Jewell for the interment of himself, members of his family, and their servants. Features of interest are the ornate 19th century stones, the grave of William Jewell, pioneer Missouri educator and mayor of
Columbia, and William's nephew - Missouri Governor Charles Hardin. Along the back wall of the cemetery are a group of graves with stone markers - neatly cut, but without names - that are presumably the last resting places of slaves that once belonged to these generally Southern families.
