The Midland Theatre, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is
Kansas City's only surviving 1920's movie palace and the grandest historic theatre facility within a 250 mile radius of
Kansas City. Built by Marcus Loew and completed in 1927, the facility presented silent pictures and elaborate stage shows in its earliest years. Purchased by American Multi-Cinema Inc. in 1966, it continued to be used as a motion picture theatre until 1981, when it began presentation of Broadway plays and musicals, concerts, ballets and special events. Such major stars as Tony Bennett, Dolly Parton, Sammy Davis Jr., Lauryn Hill, Sarah MacLachlan and Harry Connick Jr. have performed on its stage over the last 18 years.
