Southwest Missouri State University is a multi-campus metropolitan university system with a statewide mission in public affairs. Founded in 1905, it became a college in 1945 and a university in 1972. The State Fruit Experiment Station, established in 1899, is the oldest segment of the college and is now a separate campus. The main campus in Springfield offers more than 140 academic programs leading to 15 undergraduate degrees and 40 programs leading to 8 graduate degrees.
