The University of Missouri, oldest state university west of the Mississippi, opened its doors in 1839. Six Ionic columns on Francis Quadrangle are all that remain of Academic Hall, the university's first administration building, built in 1840 and destroyed by fire in 1892. The Geology Building has more than 100,000 fossil and rock specimens, many displayed in its ground and first floor corridors. On Friday, visitors can watch the mid-morning feeding of reptiles in room 202 of Stewart Hall. Contact the university for more information about tours.
