One of five state forests in Mississippi, Bienville National Forest, encompasses 179,402 acres of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams just 45 minutes east of Jackson. Forestlands are enjoyed for their many recreational opportunities, including hunting and fishing, hiking, mountain biking, ATV terrain and trails, picnicking and camping, while still intensely managed for timber production and wildlife. Three wildlife management areas are found within forest boundaries, which provide in-season hunting.
Bienville Pines Scenic Area, just a mile south of the community of Forest on Highway 501, features a nature trail in a stand of virgin pine. The Shockaloe National Recreation Trail is also located within the Bienville Ranger Distri ct.
