The Delta is the country's only bottomland hardwood national forest. It lies within the Mississippi Waterfowl Flyway and is an excellent place to watch migratory birds. The 60,115-acre forest is northwest of Jackson near the state's western border. It has two developed recreation sites.
At Blue Lake, visitors can camp, launch a small boat and picnic. The Little Sunflower site has three primitive campsites and a concrete boat ramp down to the Little Sunflower River. The forest is located in the floodplain of the Mississippi River. Except for drought years, a portion of the Delta is subjected to annual floods of various depths and durations.
