Natchez, known as the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River, is noted for its three yearly pilgrimages. Since 1932, visitors have come to experience the pre-Civil War South on Spring, Fall, and Christmas pilgrimages that feature guided tours of Natchez's finest mansion houses, built prior to 1862. Costumed hostesses interpret the furnishings, rooms, and history of these gracious homes; evenings feature live performances of historical entertainment. An organized program with two daily tours is available for the pilgrimages; to tour all the houses, which can be visited only as scheduled, several days are required. Please call ahead for schedules and details. A walk-in tour and ticketing center is located at the Canal Street Depot, and is open daily, year-round.
