Tupelo National Battlefield |
This was the historic site of the battle of Tupelo, the last major Civil War battle fought in Mississippi. On July 14-15, 1864, Confederate troops led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked General Andrew Jackson Smith's Union forces in an attempt to cut the Union supply line.
Although the Confederates were defeated in one of the war's bloodiest confrontations, the Union troops retreated soon after the battle ended. A granite marker commemorates the dead of both armies. The one-acre National Battlefield site is located one mile east of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
