The one-acre Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site, just 6 miles west of Baldwyn, commemorates the Civil War battle fought June 10, 1864. Despite superiority in numbers, Union troops under Gen. Samuel D. Sturgis were forced to retreat at the end of the all-day encounter. The Confederate force led by Gen. Nathan B. Forrest captured all Federal supplies, 18 pieces of artillery, arms and ammunition.
Granite markers on Hwy 370 show the progress of the battle, and the battle site includes two cannons, a monument to the battle, and an interpretive wayside. A cemetery next to the site contains the graves of 99 Confederate soldiers, 98 of whom are unidentified. Bicycle-only camping is available across the road from the Tupelo Visitor Cen ter; primitive cabins and picnic tables are offered.
