The capital city of Durango owes its enchantment to excellent climate and beautiful, well-preserved colonial and art nouveau buildings. But most of all, Durango is popular for its two movie sets: one recreates the United States Southwest and the other reflects the Far West.
Durango is a good town to walk around in, and most of the insteresting places to see and stay are within a few blocks of the two main squares, the Plaza de Armas and the Plaza IV Centenario. The Plaza de Armas is attractive, especially on Sunday, when musicians perform on the bandstand and locals promenade. Facing the plaza's north side is the Catedral Bas lica Menor, with its imposing baroque fa ade.
