Nestled in a narrow canyon between huge mountains, Guanajuato is a singular and perfectly preserved colonial city and the capital of the state of the same name. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, the town is a photographer's delight with its quaint plazas, winding cobblestone streets and unique underground passages. Colonial buildings are crowded together and their balconies almost touch. This architectural feature has even been immortalized in the legend of the Callej n del Beso, or Alley of the Kiss. It is so named because the top-floor balconies of two facing homes are close enough for their respective occupants to kiss!
