Situated a short distance from Oaxaca, Monte Alban was a sacred city in prehistoric times and the religious center of the Zapotec culture, which flourished over 2000 years ago. The remarkable Central Plaza, the Ball Court and many of the tombs are open to the public. It is an amazing complex situated on a levelled mountain top.
Visitors to the area will find that the best time to appreciate the spectacular beauty of the buildings in the changing light is either early in the morning or at sunset.
