Set high in the arid Sierra Madre Oriental, Saltillo was founded in 1577 and is the oldest city in the north. A pleasant place to break a journey, it has a quiet central area with a small-town feel and some lovely colorful buildings, making it a popular destination. It is known by the name of the "city of the columns," due to the neoclassical columns of its buildings.Saltillo is still the capital of Coahuila, but it has been outgrown by the modern city of Torre n in the southwest of the state.
