The state capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, is the center of a thriving coffee-growing region and is the home of Mexico's famed marimba music. It is located toward the west end of Chiapas' hot, humid central valley.
Tuxtla has several things worth stopping for, among them one of Mexico's best zoos and an exhilarating boat trips through the 800m-deep Ca n del Sumidero. Tuxtla also offers a good base for exploring picturesque villages where pre-Hispanic customs have survived.
