Asheville is located in Buncombe County (of which it is the county seat), northeast of Charlotte along Interstate 40, on the banks of the French Broad River near the Pisgah National Forest. It is situated between the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains. Asheville has experienced an 11.8 percent growth in population since 1990 with a total of 68,889 residents. The leading number of businesses are in construction, retail and the service industry. Attractions include America s largest home, George Vanderbilt's 250-room Biltmore House, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, home of famous poet and biographer, and the historic downtown. In addition, visitors can learn about the native Cherokee Tribe, raft the French Broad River and enjoy mountain folk music.
