Fayetteville is located in
Cumberland County (of which it is the county seat) between
Raleigh and
Laurinburg along US Highway 401 on the banks of the
Cape Fear River near the Fort Bragg Military Reservation,
Dunn, and
Wade. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 77,295, an increase of 1,445 since 1990. Fayetteville has four designated historic districts: Downtown Historic District, Haymount Historic District, Liberty Point National Register District and Market House Square National Register District.
