This is one of the oldest houses in Raleigh. Built in the 1760s, it has been painstakingly restored and furnished with 18th-century antiques. Colonel Joel Lane was a prominent statesman who played an active role in the affairs of the first colony and then North Carolina. His house served as the site for many historically significant meetings, including the state legislature's selection of Raleigh as the state capital. An 18th-century formal city garden and herb garden are on the grounds. Open Tuesday and Thursday-Friday 10am-2pm, March 2-December 19; closed holidays.
