Murphy is located in Cherokee County (of which it is the county seat) southwest of Asheville within the Nantahala National Forest, between Andrews and Blairsville, GA along US Highway 19 where the Hiawasee and Valley Rivers meet near Brasstown and Lake Hiawassee. Site of Fort Butler, a 19th-century frontier fort and stockade for the Cherokee Indians on the Trail of Tears.
