It was founded as a private chapel by Charles and Elizabeth Baring, the original wooden structure was built in 1834. It burned the next year and was rebuilt in 1836. The brick structure was built and it was deeded to the Diocese of North Carolina as an Episcopal Church. The Diocese of Western North Carolina was later formed out of the western region of the Diocese of North Carolina.
