American author Thomas Wolfe was born in Asheville, NC, in 1900 and was educated at the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1920. he continued his studies by earning his M.A. at Harvard in 1924.

His general style is autobiographical, drawing on his experiences as a young man. His Look Homeward, Angel in 1929 was followed in 1935 by Of Time and the River, a sequel relating the trials and tribulations of Eugene Gant.

George Webber is the main character in The Web and the Rock and You Can't Go Home Again were edited and published by Maxwell Perkins of Scribner's in 1939 and 1940, respectively, after the author's death in 1938.
