Elgin is located in southwestern North Dakota in Grant County on Hwy 21 about 60 miles southwest of Bismarck and three miles north of the [cannonri].
The area is known for its thick populations of upland game birds such as pheasant and grouse as well as white-tailed deer. Lake Tschida, located 15 miles north of town, provides fishermen opportunities to take catfish, perch, Northern pike, saugeye and walleye.
The town has a 9-hole golf called Grass Greens and is open to the general public.
