Hazen is located in central North Dakota in Mercer County about 60 miles northwest of Bismarck. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,606, a decrease of 212 since 1990.
The town's major recreational outlets are Lake Sakakawea and Lake Sakakawea State Park about 15 miles to the north.
A "must see" is the Knife River Indian Village National Historic Site located just north of town. The site depicts life as it was 8,000 years ago.
