Mountrail county is located in northwestern North Dakota and has Stanley serving as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 6,516, a decrease of 505 over the 1990 census.The south county area is dominated by Lake Sakakawea while Powers, Lower Lostwood, Cottonwood and White Lakes are situated to the north. Smaller Shell Lake is located in the east central portion of the state.
