Sioux County |
Sioux County is located in southwestern North Dakota and is completely set apart for the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Fort Yates serves as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 4,156, an increase of 395 over the 1990 census.
Other than its border with South Dakota and about 10 miles of its western border, the county lines are formed by rivers and lakes. Cedar Creek empties into the [cannonri] which in turn flows into Lake Oahe about 40 miles south of Bismarck. The two rivers form the northern boundary of the county while the big lake takes care of the eastern county line.
Of an historical note: The Sitting Bull Burial Site is located in the southeastern section of the county just southwest of Fort Yates.
